Depakine Indications

Depakine is used to treat seizure disorders of varied kind.Depakine can also be used for other purposes aside from treating seizure disorders.

 

 

Depakine Warnings

Depakine is not to be taken if you have a liver disease. Depakine is also known to cause major birth defects. Depakine has been known to cause malformations of the face and head; it has also been a cause of deformations of the nervous system, and of the heart. Depakine should never be taken by patients who are pregnant or who are planning to become pregnant.

Depakine is also not advised for patients who are nursing a baby as it passes into the breast milk and may cause harm to the nursing baby.

Children below 2 years old should be warned against using Depakine as it can increase their risks of contracting liver diseases. Children who are especially at risk are the ones taking multiple seizure medicines, with mental retardation, brain diseases, those with metabolic diseases.

Patients with Pancreatitis should be warned against taking Depakine as your initial condition will worsen and it may even lead to death. Consult your doctor first before taking Depakine to know if you have Pancreatitis.

Do not abruptly cease taking Depakine without first talking to your doctor about it. Abruptly stopping Depakine may further aggravate seizures.

It is important that you carry an identification tag that denotes that you are taking Depakine. This is especially useful in cases of emergencies.

Do not take alcoholic beverages and foods while taking Depakine without first talking to your doctor about it. Taking Alcohol together with Depakine may further increase its dizzying effect.

Blood tests and liver assessments should be done before the intake of Depakine.

Depakine Intake Guidelines

Take Depakine exactly as directed by your doctor. Never attempt to deviate from your doctor’s instructions on how to take Depakine.Each dose of Depakine should be taken with a full glass of water.Always swallow the Depakine tablet whole. Do not crush, chew or break the Depakine tablet as doing so may irritate the insides of your mouth and tongue.

Liquid forms of Depakine should be adequately measured from a dose-measuring cup or spoon.
The exact and efficient dose of Depakine can only be determined by your doctor. Do not attempt to prescribe a dose of Depakine for yourself.

 

Depakine Overdose

Overdose of Depakine may be characterized by these symptoms:
    - Sleepiness
    - Drowsiness
    - Weak and faint heartbeat
    - Decrease in the frequency of breathing
    - No breathing signs
    - Unconsciousness

If these symptoms are present and if overdose is suspected, immediately seek emergency medical attention.

Depakine Missed Dose

If you happen to miss a dose of Depakine, you can it as soon as you remember provided that is not yet near the time for the next scheduled dose of Depakine. Do not double dose Depakine.

Depakine Side Effects

The side effects associated with Depakine may range from mild to deadly. Liver failure has been reported to be associated with Depakine intake and in some cases have even caused death. Persons with weak liver and children ages 2 and below should be warned before taking Depakine as they are the ones most likely to experience liver failure.

Pancreatitis has also been reported in some patients who have been taking Depakine. The progress of the disease of some patients who acquired it from taking Depakine has resulted to death. Inform your doctor if you begin to feel early signs of Pancreatitis such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite.

Other side effects associated with Depakine intake are:
    - Hallucinations
    - Menstrual irregularities
    - Depression and psychiatric problems
    - Anemia
    - Rashes
    - Unexplained bleeding or bruising
    - Double vision
    - Allergic reactions
    - Weight gain
    - Headache
    - Allergic reactions
Other side effects not listed here may also be likely to occur. Inform your doctor if you experience any of the mentioned side effects.

Depakine Drug Reactions

Depakine may not work well with other drugs such as: Phenytoin, Phenobarbitals, Felbamate, Clonazepam, Lamotrigine, Carbamezipine.
The mentioned drugs above, when taken together with Depakine, may lessen the effects of Depakine in the body.

Inform your doctor if you are taking drugs that affect the flow of blood in the body such as coumadin or aspirin. When you are taking any of those, your Depakine dosage may be adjusted or significantly lowered.

Medicines such as anti-depressants, medicines that contain alcohol and/or alcoholic beverages, antihistamines, pain relievers and other drugs that may cause drowsiness when taken together with Depakine may result to dangerous sedation and severe dizziness.
